A Newborn Essentials Shopping Guide

A Newborn Essentials Shopping Guide

Welcoming a baby in 2025? Here’s our guide to the newborn essentials for those precious first weeks — from the coming-home outfit and first night’s sleep, to the pushchair that gets you back to your favorite coffee spot.

Coming Home from Hospital

There are some newborn baby essentials you’ll want ready from day one. Prepare their first outfit — a sleepsuit, bodysuit and a baby hat — and if you’re taking your newborn home by car, you’ll need a suitable infant car seat.

Newborn Clothing

Sleepsuits (with integrated feet), bodysuits (long or short-sleeved) and a little hat are day-one basics. Build out with all-in-ones, co-ords, outfits and booties. Our Baby Bedding pieces are gentle on newborn skin, with smaller sizes for pre-term and tiny babies. Don’t forget the perfect coming-home outfit and a pramsuit for colder seasons.

Car Seats

If you’re leaving hospital by car, you’ll need a safe, newborn-ready seat. Not sure what to pick or how to fit it? Try Let’s Talk Car Seats — our free in-store service where experts help you choose and fit the right one.

Don’t forget… Stock up on nappies, cotton wool (great for early-days cleaning/bathing) and wipes.

At Home

You’ll need sleep space, feed gear, bath items and a comfy spot for daily changes.

Moses Basket or Bedside Cribs

For the first 6 months, baby usually sleeps in a Moses basket, standalone crib or bedside crib. Bedside cribs are a safe alternative to co-sleeping, keeping baby close for feeds and soothing. Our Lua bedside crib can move room-to-room for daytime naps.

Bottles, Steriliser, Breast Pump, Bottle Prep Machine…

However you feed, the right kit helps. If you’re breast-feeding and expressing, a pump and bottles build your supply. If you’re bottle-feeding, add a steriliser; a prep machine is a 3am lifesaver.

Bathtime Essentials

A baby bath makes bathtime safer and more comfortable. Use a thermometer or a smart tub to reach the perfect temperature.

Getting Out and About

Fresh-air strolls do wonders. A pushchair gets you moving; a safe car seat is essential. Don’t forget a stocked changing bag.

Pushchairs

For newborns, use a carrycot or lie-flat seat. Pick to suit your lifestyle: lightweight/compact for city trips or all-terrain for off-road.

Changing Bags

Pack nappies, wipes, spare bodysuits and feeding gear. Look for separated sections, insulated bottle holders and a travel changing mat.

Adapting to Life with a Baby

As baby becomes more alert, a few upgrades keep everyone comfy and stimulated.

Playmat and Toys

Stimulate their senses with toys & playmats. Look for colour, textures, gentle lights and sounds. Tummy-time pieces help strengthen neck and back ready for crawling.

Seating — Booster Seats, Rockers & Swings

For short hands-free moments, choose an age-appropriate rocker, swing or seat. Alto swing adds smart features and soothing options; Bug works from ~3 months and later straps to a chair as a booster.

Highchairs

Juice highchair adapts as they grow. Snax is wipe-clean with padded seat, height and recline settings. A portable booster (like Bug) is perfect at home or on the go.

Handy to Have

These items aren’t essential but could help you and baby feel a little more comfortable in the early days.

Baby Grooming Kit

Travel-size essentials like nail scissors and an oral thermometer for quick check-ups.

Room Thermometers

A room thermometer gives peace of mind at nap time and helps you choose the right layers and blanket thickness.

Self-Care Products

Look after yourself too — stretch-mark or nipple cream, relaxing bath products or a scented candle for quiet moments.

Every journey is different. Start with the essentials, then add what works for your family — and don’t forget to treat yourself.
